This weekend marked our first trip away as a family of five. We headed up to Essex, CT for a family wedding and brought the whole troop with us. If you have never been to this part of New England, it is beautiful and such a pretty setting for a wedding and a wonderful place for a little getaway. It has beautiful historic homes that I could have stared at for days. The way each one has been so carefully restored gave me hope for all the potential in our new house. It also happens to be home of the Essex Steam Train and has a few other “train themed” places to go to for anyone who has a kid obsessed with trains like we do.
We wanted to try to make the weekend as special as possible for the kids since they were not coming out with us Friday night or Saturday for the wedding. I think it is starting to hit Ford that Tanner is here to stay and to say he has been acting up is an understatement. The picture above definitely captures his non-listening, laissez-faire attitude towards me recently. I say right, he goes left. I say no, he says yes. And the more I say don’t hit Tanner, the more he tries to hit the baby. Obviously rewarding this behavior probably seems counter intuitive, but going into the weekend I wanted to make sure we did something special for Ford in hopes to keep him happy and more importantly less aggressive towards Tanner. Lets face it, this middle child is already craving all the extra attention he can get (if anyone has any suggestions I am open ears!)
Friday night we went to a pizza place called Pizzaworks located at the train station in Old Saybrook that a friend recommended. It had a big model train display and you could watch the Amtrak trains coming in. He loved it and so did we! On Saturday we thought about possibly doing the Essex Steam Train Ride, but with limited time before the wedding we opted to just walk around Essex and explore. I would love to come back over the holidays for their Polar Express ride on the train though! For Lunch, we ended up at Marley’s Cafe, which was delicious and was in a beautiful setting at the Marina (also the same locale for the wedding we were attending later that day!) Extra bonus is you have to take a little boat across to get to the Marina, which the kids thought was an adventure in itself. We did not make it to the beach, but hear it is also beautiful and a great thing to do while there.
This weekend away ended up being exactly what our family needed. Kingsley and Ford got a lot of attention and had a great time getting to go out to eat, swim at the pool at the hotel and loved just spending time together as a family. Rud and I were even able to go out each night, have fun and enjoy ourselves at the wedding. Sometimes a change of location is exactly what is needed to get everyone back on track (no train pun intended there!) We are ready for summer!
This inexpensive Striped Top was also the perfect shirt to wear all day while walking around. Not only did I feel it was perfectly preppy for the New England setting, but I was able to comfortably breastfeed in it! At only $15 it may be my best purchase yet. I added my long Madame Mathilde Shell Necklace, which is great for summer getaways. It can be worn long or be made shorter when wrapped a third time around, which makes it adjustable for so many different necklines.
